It was the last NCC crit of the year and really the last road event in the states. The race was a tight fast course with some strong teams there. The newly crowned National crit champ Ken Hansen along with some strong teammates to help him out along with a full squad from mountain Khakis helping Luke. Then there were a lot of singe or a few guys on a team. For Exergy it was just Conor and I and the plan was for me to cover dangerous moves and have him sit in for the sprint. Everything was going to plan and I even grabbed a $500 prime in the process, then with 7 laps to go our plan got derailed. Conor flatted and it was already outside the free laps so it was up to me. I already burned almost all my matches during the race but I had to find something extra so we could walk away on a high note. I fought up front in the wind in the remaining laps to stay safe and good position. With half a lap to go Luke attacked and I felt like I was able to go but with such a narrow course there was no where to move so I had to settle for 5th. Not bad for the last race of the year.
Now I am in Grand Junction for the week visiting friends and maybe a little riding. Then I am off to Tahoe on Friday to ride with our coach and friends and just have fun. So no more serious training or riding for a while now. This is the time of year your body can actually recover and feel like a normal person again with no ache and pains. Just have fun and let the body and mind relax. I am super excited to just chill and have fun before I ramp up for 2013 season.
I am very happy to say I will be riding the Team Exergy colors again in 2013! Its going to be a great year and I am looking forward to another great year once I rest up a bit.
Enjoy the photos over the past few weeks.
Racing is pretty much done for the season. There is one more NCC crit in Vail, CO on September 30th only two hours from my home in Boulder, CO. I took it easy last week on the bike when the USA Pro Cycling Challenge raced through my back yard. I was pretty bummed not being able to race the race but I made the best of the situation. I went to a couple of stages and cheered on Team Exergy as they took on the best riders in the world.
So this next month I will be getting ready for that one last crit of the year. It will be very nice to stay at home and train for a month on familiar roads and sleep in my own bed! Once the race is over I will be heading east two more hours to visit my college town, Grand Junction, CO! I will be able to meet up with friends and past teammates and hopefully ride with the revamped Colorado Mesa University cycling team ran by Rick Crawford!!! I Will spend about a week there then head to Tahoe California for the 2nd year in a row for a week of riding with Conor, our coach Jeff Mozingo, Marty, Josh Geiszler I hope and Rob Nichols. Usually around this time I am looking forward to a break from the bike and racing but this year I want more. I already had a nice break from racing mid season and now I only have two more races left on my schedule.
This weekend is the US Pro crit nationals in Grand Rapids Michigan. It is going to be the top US pro crit riders battling for the stars and stripes jersey at the finish. We have a very strong team going for Team Exergy, Quinn Keough, Conor Mullervy, Zac Davies, Logan Loader and myself. Look for updates from the race on my twitter, I am expecting big things.
After nationals we head over to Chicago for the Tour of Elk Grove starting the following Friday. It opens up with a prolouge followed by two hard circuit/crit races. There is going to be big teams there with there big guns. This will be my last race of the year so I have nothig to hold back or save for the following weekend.
I love racing my bike and helping my teammates win bike races but you come to a point in the season where you need to hit the reset button. I had the opportunity to continue racing for another two weeks before my break but I had to turn it down. You will rarely see me turn down a bike race but I knew my body and my mind was screaming at me to take a deep breath.

Your body is a lot like a car, you need to keep fuel in it to keep moving forward. But if you leave the car running for a long period of time it will die. That is just like racing every week without a break. Your will run out of gas and you will need to re-jump your battery because it died. My body needed the same thing, my engine was just cooked and needed a jump. So I knew I needed to come home rest for a bit recharge the battery and train hard for the second part of the season. It is very important in this sport to really know your body and listen to it when it throws a red flag.
A mid season break is nice it is both physically and mentally important. Coming back home it is very relaxing knowing you will be sleeping in your own bed for more then a few nights before you head to the next race. You don't have to stress about being somewhere at a certain time you can cook your own meals and get back on a correct diet. Living on the road out of a suitcase is sometimes hard to keep a constant diet. You get to hang out with family and friends and just relax and take your mind off of racing for just a bit. After a break you will come back to racing fresh and be ready to compete at your highest level.
I am ready to leave for Canada in just a couple of days for the Tour of Delta. I am super excited to go back to this race and see the improvement from last year. There is an Extra motivation this year to go with good legs because my teammate Ben Chaddock just won Canadian crit nationals and is the National crit champion. He will be wearing the national jersey proudly in front of a home crowd and I hope I can help him win a race or two in that jersey while we are over there.
The last two weekends was a big shock to the system by having US Pro road race nationals in Greenville SC then the following weekend was Philly. These two races are very prestigious races in the US and were big races for the team. I knew I had the fitness but maybe not the climbing legs I would need. Either way I was going to give it a 100% and see where is took me.
This was my first Pro nationals and I was very excited but also very nervous. Our main goal was to get Freddie a 4th national title. The course was the same as the last 7 years with a good 9 min climb in it. I knew this was going to be my Achilles heel. My job was to just hang in as long as I could and help Freddie with anything he needed, fetch water, bring to the front, ride the front. Long story short I only lasted half the race and was pretty bummed but also it was a new style of racing from the past 1.5 months 1.5 hr-120 miles. In the end a break went on the last climb and Timmy Duggan on Liqigas soloed for the win and Freddie top 20.

Then Philly, I watched this race every year since I started racing and I knew it was a big race. I was in the same shoes as I was last week but in Philly it had a lot shorter climb that suited my riding style. It was pretty crazy riding the course and have never actually riding it before I felt like I road it multiple times from watching so many editions. Again my role was to keep Freddie fresh, it was a hot day so this meant going back to the car to get lots of water. In the end Freddie got 3rd and I finished 3 min of the lead group after all my duties early in the race.
Being on the road all the time I guess you loose track of time. Since my last post I have raced in St. Louis for 3 days and Wilmington Delaware. St. Louis was a very cool town that I have never been too before. The racing was good just lady luck was not on our side for the weekend. We were either caught behind crashes or involved in crashes in the closing laps of the race. You can't be lucky every time but we were all fortunate enough to leave with most of our skin!
After a hard 3 days of racing we started our travel to Wilmington Delaware, we ended up staying in New Market Virginia for a couple days. It was some great riding there with very minimal traffic and some awesome small roads in perfect condition. Even did some dirt roads to with it up a little bit.
Then on Thursday we were in Wilmington and talking to Elementary schools about bike safety. The first school we went to the whole school came and listen to us talk. It is very important to teach the next generation about bike safety!!

Then Friday evening was a short proluge with a cobble stone climb for the finish. The course was very technical but fast. Ben was able to take 2nd and I got 6th right ahead of Conor for 7th. Then Saturday night was the main event, a cit downtown. This was a very hot race with it being in the middle of the day. It was a fast hard race but in the end we grabbed the last podium spot with Ben taking 3rd. Sunday we all participated in the Grand Fondo. I have never done a Grand Fondo before so it was kind of nice to change it up a bit and not worry about going fast and just relaxing and talking to the locals on a great scenic ride.
Now we are currently in New York visiting family before all the Americans head to SC on Friday for US Pro road nationals and the other race in New Jersey. All my relatives live in NY so it is a great opportunity to say hello since we were so close. The last time I was here was in Middle school. The riding is not super great but we make it happen.
Late night crits was the theme of the week. It started out in Athens, GA for the first night then we traveled through SC and finished in Sandy Springs a week later. I am not going to write a recap of every race as that would take all day. In the end Team Exergy rode awesome and Carlos won two stages and the overall! I had a couple good days my self on the second day slipped into a break and finished 2nd and the next days finished 4th. I also grabbed the U25 jersey by the end of the week.
The team is now in St. Louis for the Tour de Grove. 3 days and 3 crits. Last night was a twilight race again and in the last two laps there were many crashes that disabled our train. Today is another shot at the win!
Here are some photos from speedweek.
It has been a lot of fun travailing with the guys and staff of the team. We really do get along with each other very easy, it makes it a lot easier to suffer for each other during the races.
Last weekend was the second stop for us for the NCC serires in Anistion AL for the Sunny King Crit. It was another twilight crit in downtown which always makes for a fun and exciting race. It was a 1.5 hr crit and attack after attack. Ben got in a break with Phil from Kenda and drove it for many laps to give us a free ride in the pack. Then once brought back it was back to work to cover moves. In the end Tino Conor and I were in charge to keep the speeds high in the final laps to prevent any late race attacks so Carlos could go for the sprint. In the end Carlos finished 2nd. It was a late night after the race, it is always hard to fall a sleep with all the adrenaline going from the race.
Last couple laps with Team Exergy on the front!

The Hardest Part of the weekend was having a 8am Road Race start Sunday morning . We had about a 30 min drive to the race start so it was a 5 am wake up call to eat and pack the van. With only about 5 hrs of sleep we were all unsure how the bodies would react. It was a 70 mile hilly course and about 70 guys starting. We were only able to use the right side of the road which always makes it hard to move up so once you are in good position you must fight to stay there. About 20 miles in Tino got in a break that went to the finish. Tino finished 7th and the rest of the team rolled in with the main pack.
We are all now back in Georgia for Speedweek starting this Saturday in Athens. 9 days with 7 crits. Its like a stage race for the crit squads.
I am currently in Charlotte North Carolina. We had a Big race on Saturday downtown called The Presbyterian Hospital Invitational Criterium , the highest paying crit in the USA. We were allowed to have 6 guys in the race but we only had five because Tinos plane got delayed coming from Columbia. We did not let that make an effect on the five of us. With it being a two hour crit and the longest crit I have ever done I did not know how the body would react. It was a very fast hard race which was expected but we as a team did very well. We all did what was needed but coming out of the last corner on the last lap there was a crash which made our sprinter Carlos tap his breaks but still managed 5th!
On Sunday there was a smaller crit that quite a few other teams stuck around to race Noda Grand Prix. It was a 6 corner race with the 3rd and 4th being very tight corners. It was a fast race from the gun and we rode very aggressive. We were up the road all day. With about 14 laps to go Conor road off the front until Kenda brought it back with 8 laps to go. Then all six if us assembled at the front and made a train for Carlos. It was very cool to ride like that and in the end Carlos won. It was a great feeling to get a victory on the first weekend of this trip.
We are off to Alabama tomorrow morning for the Sunny King Crtit this Saturday!
We left Tuesday evening and drove for quite a bit before we got a hotel for the night. Up bright and early to make the long haul to San Dimas Wednesday morning. We made it there Wednesday evening and went for a spin to get the legs loose after sitting in the van for a couple of days. Thursday we did a recon on the TT course that would be Friday afternoon and did some efforts to get the legs ready again for some racing!
Before I knew it I was at the start gate to take on the 3.8 mile TT up the mountain. I had a good warm up and was ready to suffer for the next 15 min or so. I felt good and did an ok ride. Morgan and Matt placed 4th and 5th on the stage and would be so on GC for the RR. Saturday was an 84 mile RR on a 7 mile circuit with a good 2 min steep climb. It was torrential rain and cold for California. We didn't let that stop us for the task ahead and that was to take the yellow jersey. After a cold day Morgan finished 5th on the stage and would grab yellow by 1 sec. We were all excited and were ready to defend it on the last day of the race at the crit. Late that night when everyone was getting ready for bed, the officials sent an email saying they were giving Morgan a 20sec penalty for drafting after a flat tire??????? We will leave it at that....who knows.
So that put Morgan down to 6th place. We did not let that damper our spirits going into the crit and we wanted to make the race interesting. Sunday was an 1.5 hr crit in Downtown San Dimas, with threatening rain we knew we had to put the pressure on. Not too long into the race Morgan and Serg got up the road with a few others and stayed away until 1.5 laps to go. In the end Logan took 4th on the stage, Morgan 5th overall and Matt 10th. Not bad for some bad luck.
The team is riding very strong and are getting their last minute preparation ready for Redlands stage race that starts this Thursday.
I am back in Colorado for a bit after being on the road for over a month. I think I am going to make the trip to Grand Junction this weekend to do a crit and RR. The collegiate team is putting on the race and I think it would be a good time to go see all my friends and keep the legs loose.
This past weekend marked the start of the season for Team Exergy! All of our hard training during the off season was put to the test at Merco cycling classic. It is a four day stage race in Merced California. The first day was an 84 mile Circuit that had something for everyone. It was no easy course and the field was strong. We ended the day with Logan taking 3rd on the stage. Next was the TT, a 12 mile rolling terrain out and back. My job was just to make the time cut and save the legs for the next two day. Serg and Logan had a great ride finishing 4th and 5th! The crit was the next day which was a long course and figure 8. It was a hard 40 miles with everyone a little tense and scared which made for some close calls. In the End Logan finished 3rd again. The whole team rode great leading up to the last day. We were all eager for a win and we knew we had the power to deliver. The last day was not going to be an easy day for anyone. 120 miles road race with rolling terrain and only seconds between the top guys on GC. We wanted to get a couple guys up the road to get time but it was hard to get guys away. We did 6 laps on a 20 mile course and the first two laps were fast and A LOT of attacks. We were in every move but nothing was staying away. Finally on the second lap Conor got in a break with two Optum guys and one Simple Green rider. They stayed away until the last lap. In the end Logon WON! 1st win for Team Exergy in 2012 and I guarantee it wont be the last.
2012 Team Exergy training camp is done and dusted. It was a great 10 days in Ventura California sun and smooth roads. Never being to Ventura or team training camp I didn't know what to expect really. This was the first time this year that the whole team was under one roof, so it was a good time to get to know one another.
It was no walk in the park with rides from 3-6 hrs in length, made for some tired guys. It was a good time to test out all the new equipment and legs.
Many of the guys headed for their home bases today and a handful of us are staying in Ventura until Merco Stage race March 1st-4th. This will be the first race for the team and we are very excited. The roster for Exergy;Ben, Serghei,Quinn,Freddie, Logan,Conor,Andres Jr, and myself.
Need to rest up for a bit and recover before the racing begins!
This camp is unlike any other camp you may read about on cycling websites. Usually when you think of a pro cycling team camp you think about new gear and lots of riding, but this was the opposite. With many new faces to Team Exergy for 2012 including riders, staff and sponsors, this was the time to meet everyone face to face and build relationships. There was no riding our Felt bikes this week as we had a busy busy schedule to tackle.
To get our first race jitters out of the way we all went Go-karting to see who was ready to go fast. When you get a lot of competitive people together in one place everything turns into a competition. Of course the obvious is the fastest lap time which Ben walked away with very easily, you also get other types of competition. Like who can drift there car the best, or who can beat the manager, or I succeeded at having my front wheel fly off 3 laps into the race and had to change karts.
Home for another week until Colorado before I head off to Team Exergy camp in California, where we will get plenty of sunshine and miles in the legs. This week can't go by fast enough as Colorado already has a foot of snow over night and still coming.
Well the second block of my Tucson training is coming to a fast halt. This time around has been much better then the first, I know the roads a little bit better, a few of the Exergy boys are here and the weather as been AWESOME!!!! I will be leaving wonderful Tucson next Tuesday morning to head to Denver for the night to celebrate my Nephews 1st Birthday. It will be a short trip as I am flying out of Denver Wednesday morning to head to Boise, ID for Team Exergys sponsor camp. Its a five day camp in Boise where we get to meet all of our teammates and Sponsors for the upcoming season which is pretty much here. I am really looking forward to get things rolling and get into the racing regiment again!!.
I have been at my parents house in Colorado for the holidays and it was nice to see family and friends for a bit. With the colder temps I have been on the trainer since I have left Tucson. It has not been as bad as it could have because I was on a bit of a break so it was bearable.
I am really looking forward to heading back to Tucson in a couple days. The weather looks better then the last trip and 5 other teammates will be there as well.
Unfortunately I got sick 3 days ago and have been in my bed since. Went to the doctors today and I got the Flu. Not the way I wanted to start the New Year but better now then later. I got an unexpected break and should be back on the bike in a couple of days and I think the sunshine in Tucson should help me feel better.
Hope 2012 is better then 2011 for everyone.
Thanks for reading
Like I said before I have never really had the chance to go somewhere warm during the cold months in Colorado and get a really good block of base in the legs. It is something new for me to go somewhere and train where I know very little people and don't know much about the town. Going somewhere unfamiliar can be very beneficial. Here I didn't have the normal distractions I would have at home. I was able to really focus 100% on training, trained really hard and recovered even harder and I feel like I am miles ahead of where I was last year at this time. With that being said, I have decided to come back to Tucson after the new year to get one last good block of training before the season gets underway. It was either stay in Colorado and sit on the trainer in the basement or come back and ride in warmer weather, it was an easy decision. So I will be returning January 5th-24th, then we have our first training camp in Boise January 25th-29th.
I cant thank the people enough who helped me while down in Tucson. It always amazes me how generous people are to complete strangers. I was very fortunate to find host housing while down here and it helps us soooooooooo much. I am able to feel more like I am at home sitting on the couch instead of a bed in a hotel room for 3 weeks and it cuts down on cost tremendously. I am able to cook real food and just relax and have a quit place to relax. I cant thank host housing families enough, you make my job way easier. I have taken over our host Tim's house for 19 days so far and he is welcoming us back when we come back, unbelievable. THANK YOU.
The first 6 days felt like I was back home in Colorado with Cold temps. The first 6 days here were the coldest on Record for Tucson, of course it was when I came here for warm weather, but I will take it over snow any day. Right now the temps are warming up where they should be. I have got some great miles in so far this first week and I now remember what tired really feels like. The first Saturday Conor and I tried making it to the Famous shoot out group ride. The start of the ride is about 18 miles from where we are staying at right now so we had to leave pretty early to make it to the 7:30am start. However Tucson roads had different plans for us that day to welcome us. We left the house around 6:20 to give us plenty of time to find the coffee shop everyone meets at. Literally less then 2 miles after leaving in the dark and our small frog lights on Conor hits a rock and double flats! So I haul back to grab a handful of more tubes just in case we get another flat on the ride. So after fixing both flats we haul a** to make it on time and about 10 minutes from the coffee house Conor flats again. So after fixing it we are pretty much already late and we finally find the start 5 minutes after we were suppose to be there and no cyclist was to be seen in any direction. SO we decided to ride back towards where we are staying and get a few more hours in. We will try again this week, but bring extra tubes and give ourselves more time.

So for now we are just going to keep getting in good base miles before the 2012 season starts very soon. We are heading back to cold Colorado on December 19th but now we are thinking of coming back down here the first week of January and train here before the first Team Exergy camp in Boise at the end of January. Riding down here sure beats riding the trainer in the Basement.
It's a Winter Wonder Land outside right now in Colorado so I couldn't of timed this trip any better. It will be nice to get a solid base in the legs this year. I have never had the opportunity to go somewhere warm in the cold months, and I have heard great things about Tucson and the Cycling community. I will post some photos once we get riding in the warm weather!Kevin Mullervyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15068825218041852285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7836442106798723184.post-18464031472330238472011-11-26T10:02:00.001-07:002011-11-26T10:14:27.028-07:00New ChangeIt's the Holiday season and 2012 is fast approaching and I have a lot of changes going on for next season and I am very excited about it. I am currently in Denver Colorado with my family and am in the process of looking for a new house in Louisville Colorado! I am pretty much moved out of Grand Junction but I have one more trip over the Mountain on Tuesday to get the last bit of things.
I recently just purchased a scooter for some motor pacing. In the past I have never got in the routine of motor pacing because I didn't have the resources so i think the high speed training will help out a lot for a stacked crit schedule for 2012.
I am leaving on Thursday Dec 1st to head to Tucson AZ to get some warm miles in. It is already too cold for me in Colorado so I am very excited to get to warm weather in the coming days! I have never had the opportunity to travel somewhere warm in the off season so I think it will have a huge benefit being able to get long hours in and mentally stronger in the winter being able to train in warm weather. Then I come back for Christmas and move into a new house, get settled in then have Team Exergy first camp in January! It will all be here before we know it.

Usually during this time it makes for great cyclocross conditions however its rough during base miles. Like I mentioned before I am not racing cyclocross this season so I have time to fully prepare for the 2012 road season. It is a nice change not having to be on good form for most of the year, but I do miss the cyclocross racing scene a bit. With the different time schedule I have plenty of time to train right. I already got most of my base miles done which is awesome because I usually don't get that done until end of January early February if I was racing cyclocross. I also am now starting some gym workouts. I go to yoga in the morning to help stretch out the muscles, it is actually a lot harder then people think so don't bash it until you try it. Then after the morning yoga session I get to work on some weights. This week is the first week so very minimal weights, don't want to go in guns blazzin and be sore for the rest of the week and not be able to recover right. In the past few seasons I have done some weights but with a different approach so we will see how this years approach works. Then after all they gym workouts I am able to go out on the road and ride when the weather warms up a bit.

I am really anxious to get back and training right. This whole past week I thought I caught the sick bug. I thought I had a virus so I rested to let my body heal and really just laid low for the whole week. I was able to get out and spin for a bit and felt great but didn't want to push it and get worse. I didn't understand why I wasn't getting better, I was doing everything right but no progress. Then I was told maybe I have hay fever? You have the same symptoms if you were sick but actually it is just allergies. I usually don't have allergies but I guess I do. I took some allergy medicine last night and I now feel like a new man. Its kind of a bummer that I lost a week of training because I thought I was sick but actually it was just allergies but o well. I am learning to really listen to my body this off season and rest when my body tells me to and that's what I did, but I was fooled this time.

This "off season" is where you put in all the hard work and long days to prepare for the following season. I think many people believe the off season is where you just sit on your butt and watch movies. That is partly right, you definitely need to take a couple of week off the bike and recover physically and mentally. But once that short break is over you need to start busting you butt for the next season. I am really excited to see the benefits from this off season, after doing a whole new approach for next season.
New news, Conor and I will be writing a blog this season for VeloNation! Stay tuned for the first post.
I am very excited to be racing for Team Exergy again in 2012. Last season I started racing with the team 2 months remaining in the season to get a taste of the pro racing scene. Next season will be my first full year racing with Exergy. I am really looking forward to the year and have been training hard so far to make a bigger impression next year. Stay tuned for more news!
This past week I was fortunate enough to travel to
California and ride for a week. My coach had a week off from work and wanted to
go see his family in California and asked if I wanted to travel with him and
get some good miles in. OF COURSE! First we went to beautiful Tahoe for a
couple of days to get some good climbing in the legs. We were very fortunate
enough to be able to crash at a condo right in Tahoe City. Josh the Exergy
mechanic knew a guy who owned the place and he was kind enough to let us crash
there. Rob is currently a cycling agent and road pro back in the day so it was
really cool talking to him for a while. We were able to catch up with my coach’s
friend from when he was growing up Marty and he road with us for a few days. It’s
always fun too ride new terrain and ride with new people, makes for a nice
change.

Monday we headed towards Sacramento to do some MTB but it
was raining since we woke up and I was not too thrilled to ride in the wet and
mud but I gave it a go for a bit. I only lasted about an hour before my coach
and I turned around and left Conor and Marty to keep riding. Then Tuesday Rob
hooked us up with AthletiCamps, which specializes in VO2 and lactate testing. I
have done quite of VO2 testing in the last couple of years but never a lactate
test so it was good to get some more data for training purposes.

to Colorado to ride with a good friend Chris. We went MTB and it was actually
fun. Smooth rolling terrain and great weather. Altogether it was a good trip

Family and Friends for a couple of days before we head back to GJ. It has been
a lot of time in the car this week. It feels like race season with all the
travel but it keeps be busy. But it will be nice when I am able to stay in one
place for more than two weeks.
Kevin Mullervyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15068825218041852285noreply@blogger.com0
